Bernalda

The roots of Bernalda date back to the Lucan and Greeks that settled the area around 700 BC, as evidenced in the greek ruins of Metaponto near the Ionian shores. Of note are the “Tavole Palatine,” a Doric temple built around 530 BC. The famous mathematician Pythagoras spent his last days here, after his religious followers from Croton were forced to disband.

The nucleus of a visit to medieval center of Bernalda is the Piazza Cavour. Here are the imposing Aragonese Castle (typically located at the top of the hill), and the Church of San Bernardino (XVI century). From the promenade, one can enjoy the view across the basento valley to the Ionian beaches. Also worthy of visitation are the Sant’Antonio Convent and the ancient Church of San Donato (from the 11th century).
